Why Is Acceptance So Hard?
Acceptance is one of the hardest emotional tasks there is, because part of us believes that refusing to accept something keeps it from being fully true.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it so hard to accept something painful?+
Refusing to accept can feel like the last bit of control, a protest against an unwanted outcome. The mind clings to non-acceptance even though reality doesn't change based on whether we accept it.
Does accepting something mean I'm okay with it?+
No. Acceptance means acknowledging reality, not approving of it. You can fully accept that something happened while still believing it was wrong and wishing it had gone differently.
Why can't I just decide to accept it?+
Acceptance usually requires grieving first. You have to mourn the loss, the hoped-for future, before acceptance becomes possible. Trying to skip the grief and jump to acceptance tends to fail.
